People new to ComputerCraft always seem to make a door lock program. You could do a variation on this and make a key-pad door lock.
Another thing includes (a bit more advanced) simple mail systems, which allow you to message another computer. Expanding on this you could add routers, allowing messages to travel further than the standard modem range. You could also make a form of server software, which stores messages until the computer runs the email program, which fetches the messages from the server.

Other common things are programs for Turtles like mining and building programs.
