I recently made a game engine and want to show it off but like all API's they do not run themselves. So I thought "I'll make a game!".
Shortly after making a 100 line 2d minecraft I thought it would be a good idea to make something that really uses the engines capabilities. So i came up with an idea similar to something I was going to make on love2d. A 2d building/exploration game set in the future
The gist of the game: ( what it's all about )
Set in the future: you are trapped on a planet, and have to mine, gather resources and explore to survive. The aim is to get back to humanity, but to do this, you must go to different planets, gather different resources, and build amazing things that let you travel through the stars and conquer the new dangers faced on each planet. The game will eventually be ported to a multiplayer environment where you can trade with other players and go to different systems with other people, but for now it will be single player.
Start story thing: ( a bit irrelevant but sounds awesome! )
Spoiler
As technologies increase, possibilities increase, people become more confident, and think they are invisible The only thing that stays the same is danger. Danger is a constant force, embedded into every action, every thing, and by forgetting this, you make the impact of it bigger than is imaginable. Hundreds of light years away from home, people think nothing of danger. The technology they rely on makes anything possible, and immortalizes them. But what happens without the technology, without the thing that makes them strong? They become weak. And when they are trapped on a planet with nothing but a bigger brain and a weak body, they are hunted. So when you are in this situation, remember: Danger is a constant, but fear is not. Fear is a fiction that your mind makes up to remind you of the danger. To overcome danger, you must overcome fear. And to overcome fear, you must be strong. Be strong soldier; be strong.
The game will either be aerial view or side view ( i will decide from comments or at a later date ) and you will have to go round and mine to get resources and eventually start building to protect you from the enemies. It will not be a block based building system! To take advantage of the engine I am using, it will be different parts that you can put on the map, that will all have characteristics like strength and resistance. There will be different player classes you can choose from at the start of the game, that will strongly affect how the game goes.
Everything the player interacts with will be futuristic. The player will start off with a couple of advanced tools that lets him make more advanced tools which will hopefully mean you can create rockets and similar things faster. To get to different planets you will need a rocket, radar and some form of oxygen tank. You will have to prepare a lot and prioritize what to take with you and what to leave. Things like water, seeds, and fuel will be the most valuable, followed by your tools and then building blocks and decorations.
I really would appreciate some help with this as it will hopefully be a large project with lots of advanced features. I am not going to leave other people to do all the work, I just know it will take a lot less time and be a lot better with people helping. I will post some pictures soon that will give you a better idea of how it will work.
Any ideas you have or criticisms or notes on how awesome the story is :P/> just post below. Thanks!

I think aerial view would be nice ;3

Thanks for the feedback :D/> The only problems I have with aerial view is that mining might be hard to add in, as it's all from one level instead of being able to dig down. Would rocks on the surface be a solution? Sometimes they could have resources in them etc.
Also, how would I draw the player from aerial view?

Extremely good point. :P/>

Ok, thinking about it…I think side view would be better for the planet part of the game, however i will definetly develop the space part of the game and that will be aerial view.
The starting tools will probably consist of a mechanised arm ( similar to the power tool in voltz ) and an atomic restructuring bench ( will rearrange atoms in mined substances to create new things like ores and tools )
The player will have a small inventory, maybe 5 slots with up to 100 in each but there will be upgrades to all of these.
The colour scheme will probably be quite blue as there is blue, light blue, turquoise and purple in cc so things like grass and stone will be blue ( it's an alien planet so it's supposed to look unrealistic )
Most things in the game such as tools and ships will be able to be upgraded quite easily and i might add in an online store where you can craft money with resources and have items teleported in…this is quite low down on the list of things to do though so it may take a while.
Once again, if you have any suggestions or comments post them below. Thanks for reading!

So do you want to go for the standard upgrades? like Drill, Hull, Fuel, Cargo, Heat resistance? Or do you have something else in mind?
Also, for the sake of realism, I think the atomic restructuring bench (or the atomic reassembler?) should not create big things like ores and tools (since atoms are small and tools are big) but it can refine ores into hardened bars or something? Imagine the atomic structure of metals being reassembled into a more stable and pure crystallic form. But thats just a random thought xD
For the digging part, do you want to go for a motherload/minecraft style block digging system or something else entirely?

No, Yes and Kinda.
The upgrades will be parts you add in that upgrade all the different things with different levels. The reassembler ( <- way better name ) will just change things into other things like an ore into a bar. The player will then have to craft the things with something else. The mining system will have to be like minecraft because of the small amount of pixels but will probably have to be blown up with a tool to mine them to make it a bit more futuristic…idk really :P/>

Sounds kind of like my game Creativity, built in Love2d. The link to my site is below, fallenwolfgames.com, i use side-view for mine. Been sick so development has been slow :/

To be honest I might not continue with this because of the limited graphics in cc. Would you like any help with your love2d game? I am quite experienced with it and feel like a challenge :P/> Other than that I think I will focus completely on
Hero's of Tlön, or at least till that finishes…

I don't need any help with Creativity, thanks for asking though. I stopped working on Adventure Craft because computercraft just seems so limiting when it comes to games

^that..
I was actually working on a relatively simple mouse-driven game, which i had to cancel because of the extreme limitations CC gave..

They really need to add to the amount of pixels on the screen I think…it would make so many programs possible, even 3d games could look good with double the amount of pixels.
