With the advent of wired peripherals in 1.51, it would be really useful to be able to tap bundled cables with a "switch" peripheral*. The utility of wired peripherals is pretty clear and the same advantages that "wiring" brings to monitors, printers, modems applies to bundled cables as well.
Would it be desirable to have two types of switches - a RedPower switch for bundled cables and a Redstone switch for vanilla? I could see some cool use cases for a Redstone switch, both to detect and emit signal, especially if strength were included.
Edit/Clarification: A peripheral that can output/input redstone/bundled cables
* I personally believe this would be well within the spirit of Elo's limited permission for RedPower/CC interop, but would like to understand any dissenting opinions.

You already have what you call a switch. It's called a computer. All you have to do is have the receiving computer interpret the commands, and output the corresponding redstone/bundled cable signals.

I get that, the point I'm trying to make is that everything else can now be moved to wires except bundled cables/redstone. Aren't they conceptually just another kind of peripheral?

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by switch. Do you mean a peripheral that can output/input redstone/bundled cables?

Cloudy - yes that's exactly what I mean, sorry for any confusion.

Is this what you mean?

No. He means a peripheral (which could be used across the networking wires) to interact with redstone and bundled redstone just like the computer itself does.

I like the idea. I know you can use a computer to do it, but not having a computer running a loop waiting for messages would be better.

I was thinking why put a peripheral on the computers side when you can connect direct. I blame a lack of coffee /jk . I kinda missed the point didn't I srry's
.
Now I understand it actually sound like a very useful block would allow infinite (almost) IO for one computer. [edit ]like the RP IO expander [/edit]

I really don't see why this is needed. As stated before, you can use a computer to do it.
I plan to make a bundled cable control panel / logic panel over the break, so you can use that if I decide not to be lazy.

Think of it this way……….
A computer can do it…. a computer has 6 sides, that means only 6 bundled cables can attach to the computer. I've had times where I needed 7 cables. that means 2 computers.
Now a peripheral that connects through the network cable. thats almost an infinite amount of cables.
I like this idea.
Cool! :)/> maybe make it like the IO expander where there can only be a limited number on one line (if possible)?

Ah, I see what it is now. I thought it was literally just a bundled cable control, didn't think of it as a peripheral.

didn't think of it as a peripheral.
o.O o.O o.O it says peripheral in the title, and people have been saying peripheral all over … how did you … ? o.O

As in, I didn't think of the usefulness of it as a peripheral. Bad wording on my part, :lol:/>

I would definitely be in favor of this one. I highly dislike wasting resources and time on another computer when a peripheral could do the job better.

Plus: Another computer needs much more real processing power and memory. If you say "Use another computer", you could also say that you don't need peripheral cables at all. So this is the logical conclusion from using peripheral cables.

With this you can do the dream of every fellow computercrafter.. Control all your doors with one computer. (This is a joke:P)
But for real, you can do really awesome stuff with this. You can control all your farms, your idkwhatyouhavebuiltwithbundledcables and anotherthing.
If I could vote for this, I would. :)/>

How did you manage to connect bundled cables? i tried project:red and redlogic and none of them work with computer craft, i searched the net and all i can find is that it support redpower 2 cables, but thats impossible to use unless u run a old version of minecraft (1.4.6) or did i miss something, i really need the bundled output so if there is any solution to get the cable working in 1.6.2 that would make me wery happy :)/>

ComputerCraft supports RedPower2 bundled cables and the MineFactory Reloaded RedNet cable.
