I think in the list of "Do not Post" statements, put an example of a reply with just grammar corrections. I think it serves no real purpose to reply to someone just to fix their grammar. Just my 2 cents.

Oh my god, yes. This. It drives the ever-holy crap out of me when people do this. It takes the entirety of my being to resist correcting the person who did the correcting. And I don't have a lot of self-control, so I don't resist very often. If you're going to be a dick and correct someone's use of a bloody language, at least learn the language yourself first.

He means no grammar corrections at all. I like your idea better, though. :P/>Oh my god, yes. This. It drives the ever-holy crap out of me when people do this. Indeed. There are so many dicks who pick on people who are probably not native English speakers.

I prefer to pick on Google Translate and how bad it can be! :P/>Indeed. There are so many dicks who pick on people who are probably not native English speakers.

I think I would only discourage someone from correcting if he's doing it in a snippy way.
If it's honestly just to help out, then why not? I for one am glad if someone points out an error I made. I wouldn't want to stay ignorant just for the sake of my ego.
We're not infallible, so it's not like the world ends when we made a mistake.
If someone points out someone else's mistake only to show some kind of superiority though, or to let off steam, then I'd highly discourage that.
But if it's an honest act of trying to help someone improve their knowledge I see no harm.
Then again, I do agree that a post shouldn't be about the grammar mistake only, as that is not adding anything to the conversation.
'tis better to let it go for the sake of thread-quality and reserve that for when one really has something worthwile to add.
Before you hit send, just ask yourself: Do I really need to post this? Does it help anyone but myself? Really?
You can't imagine how many times I wrote a wall of text and then at the and said: "F*ck it…" and cancelled it.
For all the posts I sent, there are at least three times the posts I cancelled.
This one came close. ^_^/>

I can imagine. I do it a lot too. Walls and walls of text, cant be bothered reading it through or just cancel 'cause cbf responding to the response, etc…You can't imagine how many times I wrote a wall of text and then at the and said: "F*ck it…" and cancelled it.

I actually don't mean none at all. I mean a post that consists ONLY of them, or with an insult too.

Every time I read one of your posts I feel enlightened. I would have to totally agree to you on this discuss.I think I would only discourage someone from correcting if he's doing it in a snippy way.

This is already covered under "Not adding to the conversation", as Espen suggests. No need to explicitly call this sort of post out. Posters are expected to exercise sense and judgment when replying.

Not to be inflammatory here, but it seems to me that it does need to be explicitly called out. "Not adding to the conversation" is pretty ambiguous, and had it been up to my interpretation, I would have interpreted adding to the conversation as including making grammar corrections so long as the person was being polite about it. For example, to help non-native speakers with advertising their programs by correcting them with some things. Were I posting on a non-English site, I would appreciate the help.

Well, let me clarify: I think that polite corrections are fine, but they do not, in and of themselves, constitute a useful addition to the conversation. If a post contains nothing but a grammar or spelling correction, then that doesn't add anything to the topic, and would be better delivered as a friendly PM. However, a post that adds meaningful content but also includes a correction is fine.

Some people are trying their best to speak properly. I can take myself as a example for that:
I make lots and lots spelling errors or grammar errors. But when people 'rage' on me because my spelling isnt correct, then they are a dick. And there are a few here on the forums, no names to be mentioned, thats just mean.
But you have very much nice people on those forums too, take for example ( crap, I cant choose :P/> ), that correct you in the polite way. When Im speaking for myself, I appreciate that. Because I learn from it, the next time I will think about it.
And some people are just lazy, they only want their problem to be solved, so to say.Edit: why the … do I see html tags when I edit this on my phone?
