MediaWiki is perfectly fine for us - Wikipedia uses (practically) the same software. Anything else is too weak or has issues with things like templates, dynamic content and edit tracking.

WYSIWYG editors are always really finicky and unpredictable. Using a regular plain-text editor allows you to see the code behind the page you're creating/posting.

Isn't there an addon that adds buttons that when clicked, adds code.

The IntegratedRedstone wiki for Redpower was on Wikispaces, which has a WYSIWYG editor. Editing was HORRIBLE. Then Danol started a MediaWiki-based wiki for Redpower, which is now the only thing I edit because it’s not painful.

You don't do anything – you can only edit MediaWiki using the wiki markup. That's it, end of story - we can't change it.
