I'm surprised there isn't one of these threads by now. Some say that a person's desktop tells a lot about the person who uses it. What kind of setup do you have?

For me, I'm always constantly changing between environments and OSes depending on my needs. I'm on Windows 7 at the moment.

(Yeah, my taskbar didn't show up for some reason, but it's just a chrome window open with Anime.)

Yeah, these are usually interesting, though I'm not sure it qualifies as a game. Let's try this one out in General.

Edit: Here's mine. Yes, it's an actual desktop. One 1920x1080 screen, one 2048x1152 screen. I don't like a bunch of crap on my desktop.

Here's my desktop. Now don't judge me for using windows vista, its only temporary. I'm getting a new custom built very soon. And don't even get started about internet explorer. I'm just using it because i've some bad experiences with chrome on this computer previously.

–What?! Are you using some sort of a command prompt?

they're both linux machines (slackware on the work computer, arch on the home computer).

sithwm is a really minimalistic window manager, it only draws 1px borders around windows, and it's mostly controlled by hotkeys. the four windows in that screenshot are all xterms running bash and other assorted console applications. it seems obtuse, but one you get used to it, and set up hotkeys that you like, it's actually very intuitive.

fluxbox is slightly more self-explanatory, the windows in that screenshot are also xterms running bash.

This is a weird one for me to answer because I actually use sticky notes.
With:
Spoiler
I'm realizing that one could get a lot of information about me from the notes that I'm keeping… I actually have a to do list for Minecraft… those numbers are coordinates of diamond veins in a server that recently crashed, so I'm deleting those now… In my general to do list, I have "Make calculations for rotational velocity necessary to spin apart Earth." I also have "Luminosity Equations 'We are Young'"… both of these are physics curiosities from random conversations. The latter is meant to be the period of time that the Earth could potentially shine brighter than the sun if you were to combust all combustible materials at once. A few D&D notes… two apologetics books to read, some Carl Sagan, and some general logic…. and there are two notes that are completely obstructed, but actually don't have anything meaningful on them.
Without:
Spoiler
I like to save all of my temporary files to my desktop since that's the only way I ever remember them. Most of those text files are items that I started writing elsewhere that I finished or meant to finish later, and, at a glance, 5 of them can be deleted right now. I'm on Windows 7, but I wish it were Mint, and I have experience with Ubuntu, so I put my bar on the side as if it were Ubuntu. The desktop image is something I GIMPed together in a few minutes so I could feel artsy and stuff.

Yea I find Airmail far superior to Mail, it's not as good as Sparrow, but that doesn't work any more. I actually wrote about half of their Q & As for them a few months back.

The app that puts the time on my desktop is GeekTool. It uses shell scripts to write text. I'm making my own version which makes everything far easier, but I haven't worked on it for a while.

I've completely redone my Rainmeter desktop. I moved my clock to the top of the screen, put the date beside it, moved the stats into the (barely readable, but hey, they aren't in my face!) upper-right corner, and got a new wallpaper. I know that it has a pattern that resembles the flag of some countries, but I'm actually using that as a handy organizer, with no intention to be racist. I also slapped on an icon from the internet on everything but the recycle bin.

You could use GeekTool.

I started make an app a bit like Rainmeter last year but didn't get around to finishing it. Once I finish OneCode, the train station system on Cranium's server, my CC Forum Stats website, the Facebook chat app for Mac, release OneOS 1.2 and probably about 10 more things I'll see if I can get around to releasing it.

Evil resolution mismatch! This is a typical working screen. It can get cluttered quickly, moreso if the "working" is taking place in a fullscreen, in which case everything gets shoved over one side for use. Upwards of 10 Chrome tabs full of references is not unusual because I'm a tool who doesn't trim his stack.

Spoiler

Same day, same time, but with the desktop exposed and the start menu just to show the actual desktop. I don't like it, I might change it to reflect the one on my phone to promote the whole cross-platform thing I've got going between portables and this desk-riding PC. The Rayman link is there because my SO can't be bothered to learn how to access it through steam.

AwesomeWM is a window manager run in Arch Linux. You have multiple levels of display in Arch. Most of them are exchangable, if not all, for different ones
 • X server (X11 / Xorg)
 • Display Manager (LXDM, GDM)
 • Window Manager (Awesome, Gnome, Unity, Cinnamon)
 • Desktop Environment (Gnome, Unity, Cinnamon with additional packages/programs)
AwesomeWM itself is not a desktop environment. It is literally almost nothing until you configure it and install applications. You don't even have a terminal. PLEASE note this if you want to try it out.

Also, feel free to talk to me any time if you want to get started using Linux. :3

Not a bad place to start in my opinion. My first OS was Ubuntu 12. Then Debian 7. Then Mint 16. Then Arch. It takes a while to get to the lower levels of the OS.

I changed my menu bar a bit, so why not. Now it's just an analog clock. I can swipe down with two fingers from the top of the trackpad to reveal the other items.

That isn't my only wallpaper. In fact, I've been compiling a collection of the best photos I can find basically and I generally get favourite from Flickr each day. You can find all 867, that's enough for one a minute for fourteen and a half hours, as a Google Drive folder that you could even sync to your computer so you get the latest ones right here.

I used AutoIT to randomly select a forum post from one of 5 of my favorite forum sites, apply some random artistic filters, and set it as my desktop. The results were brilliant, it does this once per hour. I will probably set this up on all my computers.

The "Your servant" VBS on there is a script that, when run, will read a random statement through the Windows voice thing and then delete itself. I have to copy paste it, or it will be deleted for good.

No clue what "new 3" was. I checked, but it's empty. I will keep it anyways.

Visual Basic 1998 Express. Super useful.

On the other side is my throw around pile. I put whatever there and move it somewhere else later.

I don't actually use the icons on the left side. I guess they're there for decoration; I use "Run" for everything.

Mike, I've removed the link from your signature. Linking to external paid services that are unrelated to ComputerCraft is generally considered advertising/spam. I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt.

Why do you use W7? W10 is available for free for 7, 8 & 8.1 users

And it's Mac OS 10/X, OSX = Operating System 10, do you reallt think that makes sense? Windows OS 10 could also be called OSX. Mac, Mac OS, Macintosh, Macintosh OS, whatever.

Because W10 is Spyware. I might consider updating, 'cause there are pleny of programs that disable W10 Spying. Before you ask why I'm so harsh when it comes to my privacy, look at my location. Nothy is also European so most likely he has the same opinion as I have.

Apple actually market it simply as "OS X", not "Mac OS X" anymore, because Apple.

My PC is nothing special, but I'm planning to upgrade soon. Intel Core i3-3220 @ 3.30GHz with 16G DDR3 RAM with a Nvidia MSI GTX 660.
I'm running two screens but there is generally nothing on the second one unless I'm gaming etc.

As for my phone, it's pretty old (3 years) but it still works like a bomb. I tend to keep my phone 'desktop' clean as possible, not sure why actually.

Depends on what you plan to do on it? I like it for streaming/gaming/youtube to see current stats, view the streams chat etc etc, for developing it is very helpful because you have two screens to put code on etc, which is useful. Just depends on what you plan to use it for.

lol I basically say exactly what Danny says above me. (you posted while i was typing this out -.-)

It depends on what you do. I first got a second screen maybe, 3-4 years ago, and I can't do without one. Even when my 19" 3rd screen broke I felt lonely.
I only have two screens because well, I upgraded my main monitor to LED which left me with a spare LCD. I didn't intentionally buy a second monitor.

Having two monitors gives you more working area. Like when I for example; code for CC; I'd have the emulator and maybe the directory of the computer open
on my second screen, with Sublime Text on my main monitor. or say I'm gaming, I'd normally keep my Steam friends list and Teamspeak open on my second
screen, just to see whats happening.

What I often find myself doing is watching series or YouTube videos on my second screen while doing something else on my
main monitor. You most probably wont play a game across two monitors, because multi-monitor gaming is normally done on 3 of the exact same monitors with
one in the middle, I've never used both screens for gaming anyway because they're not the same size.
But like I said, it all depends on what you do. I've found my second monitor extremely useful and helpful and will try to have a second monitor whenever
possible.

Not because of problems, no.
I wanted NixOS because the feature list looked very promising. Having your entire system state described by a configuration file is amazing (in fact, basically everything is in my configuration.nix now). The fact that you can undo any configuration change atomically is also very useful when you're as likely to break everything as I am. :P/>

Apart from that, it's the perfect fit for me: I love functional languages, and now my entire system is described in a purely functional language - Nix.

EDIT: The nix package collection also has literally all of Hackage in it.
It's a dream for haskellmen like myself.

If it's a single player game then I say have at, it's your playing experience so do what you like.

Multi-player though, only if everyone involved knows and is ok with it, unless the game has some kind of persistent elements such as ranking or non-cosmetic unlocks, then no as that's unfair on others.

This is just my opinion though.

I'm like "they don't protect their (maybe multiplayer) game against this? Then it's a feature" most of the time. Because storing variables on the server, and detecting "strange" changes isn't too hard. (Even RoboCraft managed to do it.)
