Out of curiosity - how easy is it to update mods now-a-days?

With all the talk about Mojang and their Mod-API (which I'm not even sure if they're still doing); I'm curious if it's any easier to update mods - or if nothing's changed since 1.5.x :)/>

It's pretty easy, at least for smaller mods.

Forge has probably made it more manageable.

Last time I tried it I got put off by the sheer amount of decompiled source.
