The idea is simple; just make an upgrade for turtles with obsidian. They would be black and resistant to explosions, but also take longer to break.

I like this idea!

Why?

Probably mainly for the explosion resistance. It sounds like a demo/griefer turtle. I'm not sure how else it would be useful.

Yeah, if only just for demolition purposes, it seems useful. I'm certainly not intending for griefing, but I suppose that would be a possibility. However, griefing is already possible, albeit requiring multiple turtles, without this suggestion implemented.

I am curious how it would work in practice, if a turtle required 9 seconds to break (with a diamond pickaxe) and moved every couple of seconds, would you be able to break it? Or would the movement interrupt the attempt to break it and require that you start over again?

That's a fair point, but I suppose that a user would have to think ahead and perhaps test with a regular turtle before sending out the obsidian turtle.

I wrote once an idea of obsidian turtle in attempt to allow turtle to use ender chest. Another part of it was absence of console to allow turtle to know it's real owner. Idea was completely ignored, but was half-joke. ;)/> Too griefing friendly.

Turtles are already creeper proof. Why would you need anything more durable than that?
