Is It Just Me Or Does Everything Seem Quiet...

As the title says, I think the Computercraft forums and Minecraft itself seem very quiet.

It seems like every useful program for CC has been made and the upcoming Minecraft patches are quite dull.

I guess the community needs something new…

What do you think?

I agree. It seems like (almost) everything has been done.

You're definition of "everything" must be rather limited.

dull… i wouldnt call it dull, minecraft 1.7 will bring out heaps of new features that already seem to be awesome(snapshots), the minecraft modding comunity are bringing out bigger and better mods(personal choice maybe) and CC forums are still producing awesome programs

I suppose people get bored, and move on to bigger and more rewarding projects, which cannot only be used inside of a shitty, slow, indev, non-free game.

And yet you remain here… odd.

I just browse the forums. It's been ages since I've actually done something with the mod, or even Minecraft.

Yeah, I pretty much stopped when I realized that I was just posting because I had nothing else to do at 2am. It'd be nice to get something new, but I do agree with Mads.

Someone should code ComputerCraft for Terraria :D/> Imagine it :P/>

Well i would say it will be more quiet until next Minecraft or ComputerCraft update - it always get move movement after updates.

CC for Terarria would be kinda cool or some similar thing.

As for GTA V, unless it comes out on PC then meh.

It would be cool to find a decent new sandbox game…

"Has everything been done?"

I would say no. A lot of trivial things has been done. We can all lock our doors, make nice tunnels, play rock paper scissors digitally and automatically bake bread now. And we have a few big programs that can do some really cool stuff like manage large computer networks, perform wireless printing, surf the web and login using a remote shell, which are all awesome things.

The number of atomic things possible with programming are definitively infinite, but there's certainly a glass ceiling when it comes to functionality, particularly when we're talking about integration with the core mechanics of minecraft (which are finite). But with other mod integration the complexity and room for innovative ideas is only going to get bigger.

I think it's really cool that after all this time we've amassed this community of really skilled programmers that share a common passion; it can take game companies years to do that. So long as we all enjoy the mod and people keep using it, I'm sure new and innovative ideas will continue to trickle through, maybe slower when they did but arriving all the same.

One thing I notice is that there are quite a lot programs which do the same in the end. For example, one has a GUI, one can only be ran with arguments etc.

But the thing is, it is all done differently. With that I mean, there is almost never 100% the same code. One is more efficient, the other is more around but gets the job done. Also, there are tonnes of different algorithms to do the same thing.

That is just what makes programming infinite, but we need to think what we would ever need.

It's like, I want to achieve x, but it's needs to be automated. That is the point of programming imo.

Also as far as nothing new, I agree, I have seen so many door locking programs it's quite funny. Also I am working on a few things that I am pretty sure has not been done yet.
  • Custom HTML parsing, It will have it's own markup, because It's computercraft, and can't support as much.
  • networking layer, I have packet formats, and a network api that makes it super easy to send/receive data, it will raise an event when it receives a protocol. The events can be made easily with anonymous functions.
  • Operating/shell system, I have been working on a gui that is all designed by me, Also it does not try to make something like windows. I am taking a different approach by making something new rather then trying to copy windows or something.

Well ya It is silent. Mostly cause everyones got school. I also cant find anything I can make/do, cause either someone already did it or I keep getting annoying errors like '204' when I think of something cool. But ya I do agree we need something new :P/>. And ya It would be cool if they had CC for terraria :)/>
