Would you like to do this series on my computer craft server so if anyone wants to come on and work with you they could? The information is found at http://www.computercraft.info/forums2/index.php?/topic/15793-164no-whitelistcreative-valicraft/ I hope to see you there.

That would be helpful as i was thinking of making lessons on computers for other people to watch. i went on your server and its survival so i may take a while to get started and any of them are recorded on the server. i had also noticed that there is no redpower alternative whch would be very useful if you know how to add it(i can help if you want ive hosted modded servers before for friends)

Okay, teaching CC Lua is good. I still have no idea why people teach the basics of Lua when we have the PIL though…

The PIL is not, and I repeat, not a good source for learning lua as a beginner of programming. PIL was targeted towards people who have had some prior programming experience, e.g. people who are looking for a lightweight scripting language to use for their games. It says this at the beginning of the book (at least, it did in the third edition, which I own).

When you see somebody interested in programming and wants to learn lua (e.g. 80% of CC's community), please do not direct them to the PIL. Link them to a tutorial that actually teaches programming concepts, and not just the Lua language. It's especially useful if the tutorial also teaches you how to use the library or system you're working with (e.g. ComputerCraft) in conjunction with the language. A good example would be the tutorials on lua-users, or on the wiki.

Although for the most part I agree with your post, I disagree with this part. Teaching to a certain platform almost always causes issues later when an individual is changing platforms. In the case of ComputerCraft, many young programmers in training will use it as a stepping stone to get into other lua platforms, and from there more difficult languages. By teaching first the general concepts, and from there providing more detail on platform specifics (denoting the switch explicitly), new programmers will probably find transitions less difficult.

I've actually encountered people who assumed the existence of OS dependent features posting questions about said features. It only causes problems.

I've always had better results searching the http://lua-users.org/wiki/ because they explain it a little better, and provide much easier to comprehend examples.

Agreed. The PIL is a great resource, if you enjoy reading endless passages of text that (if your trying to code for the first time) you don't understand at all. But if you're the average person trying to make basic programs, a video or beginner-friendly text is much better.

Am I the only one here who started out Lua (my first language) by reading the entire reference manual?

I read the PIL, but Python is very similar to Lua, and before coming to CC I did MCEdit Filters, which required Python.

But the main point of my post is this: Do you plan on making more videos? Because you haven't made one in a while, and being consistent is a good thing for YouTubers. (I know Lua, I'm hoping you will do more advanced stuff like NitrogenFingers where he dosen't show you how to do it, but a good way of doing it, the way that a little noob wouldn't figure out.)

At least update your thread with your functions video. It makes you look better. And grammar counts, too - if English is not your first/main language it is acceptable, but you should know how to properly capitalize your sentences. I don't mean to offend you with this, but rather I mean to give constructive criticism.
