I was thinking when I was looking at the Ask a Pro on one topic.
Then I got this idea.
It is the scanner.
You could use scanners to read a printed page put in the slot then scan it, then have it saved as a file or other things such as ticket machines ( I got the suggestion from the topic about help with a Ticket Machine. )
I think that would expand the abilities and uses of programs and possibly even expand servers in certain areas.

Yah, that would definitely help my ticket machine alot.
Possibly could be a new block to add in CC1.6.4

Why not just write a peripheral?

I think this would be quite cool.
However, you could also use Pocket Computers and a disk drive, especially if Dan adds (if he hasn't already) shift clicking Pocket Computers on Disk Drives (as disks do).

Why not just write a peripheral?
Why ask for anything then? I know where you're coming from, but it'd mean that you'd have to install 100s of peripherals to get what you want.

Exactly. Ofc you can make a custom
peripheral but having scanners in vanilla
CC would be much better (think about
inexperienced users). I agree with this
suggestion.

Not everyone can mod. Please keep that in mind.

I don't think you can make a peripheral for reading paper bud…

Since the 'paper' in MC actually has the text stored in a variable somewhere, making a peripheral to pull that text 'as if it were scanning the paper' might be possible. Let me finish that with a '?'

Yeah but how are you gonna pull the info…
You are surely not gonna shove a bunch of paper in a disk drive are you?

Haven't this been suggested before? But I think it would be a very useful block to have in CC though.

That's what the peripheral I was referring to would do. Essentially, I was infering a 'scanner' peripheral that you put your paper into and it 'scans' the text. Now that I think of it - this is exactly what I was thinking of - unfortunately it hasn't been updated beyond MC 1.52 and CC 1.51.

The page text is stored as tags inside the "tag" NBT element of an item, right (like Vanilla books)? If so, than this is just a matter of knowing how to make a peripheral, which is easy, and reading the content of the tags and creating a method that can access that content. With decent modding knowledge, it should be pretty easy.

Why not adding to your scanner a function to read the name of any object renamed by an anvil too? ^^

Dog: Ok I got you.
awsmazinggenius: Yeah, Question is that how are you gonna pull that info from the book, printed page, etc.
ExDomino: ^^

Edit: Plus not really. Have you ever made a mod?

How are you going to pull that info?

Umm, I've been saying that you create your mod boilerplate, make a TileEntity (to store the paper) block and add a texture, make up a GUI for it to insert paper, and make a method for CC that let's you get the NBT content of the page.

How about having it read vanilla Minecraft maps ?

That would be even cooler. I also suggest that you can get the name of an enchanting book when you insert it inside the scanner

Thanks for correcting, you're right. It would be awesome to be able to read the lores, don't you think? :)/>

I'm not a tekkie wiz but if this was to be added them you could edit the printed page to work a bit like a disk drive so it saves it on the actual data of the item granted it would only work with newly printed pages post update but the scanner would be a cool new block or an addition to the printer.
