This will be my projec log for both me and anyone else interested. Please note this will be the first time I build a computer, so any tips and tricks are welcome. Hope you enjoy as much as me, will be posting pictures later today, after I dissassemble the thing and find out how I want to set this up.

SteamStation: Project Log

Hey everyone, with the announce of SteamOS and the Steam Boxes, I've been wanting to try my hand at making one. Yesterday, I saw a PS1 at the thrift store, and thought "Where better to put a computer for the tv, than in a console?" So I picked it up. :D/>

Will post pictures as soon as I get to a computer. I've ripped the thing apart, and scrapped it down to the shell, I now plan on painting it a glossy black, with some blue accent. Since it's a steam box, I'm not putting a disk drive on it, so if you have any ideas on what to to with the tray area, tell me please. I'm going to start shopping around for parts soon, so if you have suggestions for that, too, please tell me.

You could put usb ports in the cd tray.
#EDIT:
and maybe "remove" the plastic shield of the cd tray and replace it with glass (or some other invisible stuff) and add blue LEDs :D/>
#EDIT2:
Found 2 links of people who tried kinda the same:

http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=221710
maybe you might get inspired by that :D/>

I was planning on putting the usb ports into the memory slots, similar to what you linked, but I do like the idea of an open top to see the insides…. the only problem is, I have no idea what motherboard/processor to get! D:

The tray area flips up, right?
You should totally make that a flip up miniature screen.

I considered that, but I think that would make more sense if I kept the actual playstation. Then screen/controller/battery integration would make more sense. As it stands, I dont see the point of a small screen for a computer designed for a tv other than the 'cool' factor. The tray area flips up, right?

displaying CPU temp, drive storage, RAM usage, etc.

Hmm. I suppose that would be neat, the only problem being, how would I set such a system up…. Actually, I may have a screen lying around…displaying CPU temp, drive storage, RAM usage, etc.

You could have it be a actual CD/DVD drive.

You should look at these link for the motherboard. Maybe you find something.

Not sure if this is what you want though.

if you're going to rip the PS1 apart, keep the internals. See if you can repurpose them–maybe use it to host a small website or script for CC?
I feel kind of sad you're wasting a perfectly good PS1.

Yeah, you might even be able to just keep the PS1's disk drive, though it might be slow. Then again, what do I know about disk drives? I built a computer without one.You could have it be a actual CD/DVD drive.
by a cheapo $25 one, but make sure it's meant to be hooked up to something. Buying something like a $5 picture display screen is almost impossible to repurpose, and wouldn't have high enough refresh to even display ram and cpu usage. If you buy one with a touch screen you could even have a way to easily overclock your system if you could figure out how to set that up… Might not be possible without a specialized moboHmm. If i were to get a motherboard, i would use Gigabyte because they have those ultra durable so if you drop it, it wont go into a million pieces from lets say, sholder height would normaly kill a motherboard.I was planning on putting the usb ports into the memory slots, similar to what you linked, but I do like the idea of an open top to see the insides…. the only problem is, I have no idea what motherboard/processor to get! Also, if i were to get a CPU, i would use a Intel Core i7.
