And it's not even running the latest CC. And CCU4 is still WIP, at least not closed officially. I'd suggest to rename your project to something else.

A new CCU sounds interesting seeing a lack of progress and a general negative attitude toward the most recent one. However, so far the greatest shortcoming of the CCU's is actually having teachers. It is not possible to schedule classes, and run a server like you would a actual school. Instead it might be better to create programs that players can use on the university server, which they can interact with and learn the api from.

Honestly forming an entire server around this idea is just not feasable. You will have a extremely small player base, who will learn what they want to know, get bored, and leave. It might be better for you to have the server as a creative server with the CCU as a side attraction.

Thats what were planning on. We have 1 teacher so far. Just waiting a reply on 1 other guy. But what were most likely were gonna do is have our staff work on a program for the api. We want all students to be able to learn when they can Not when the schedule is like irl.

Using the same name and essentially trying to behave as though CCU4 is dead is extremely disrespectful and rude.

That said, we should talk about the viability of this approach in general. I'm sorry, but there have been several attempts at a "CCU". A new one overlapping with the previous one that's still in production isn't going to do any better. Especially not when it's run by someone extremely new to the community.

The problem with this, and each other incarnation is that it's just not a good medium for this kind of goal. The best medium needs to be available 24/7 in a highly visible place, that is searchable and organized. I can think of no such medium that is better than our very own Tutorials section and wiki. Rather than having these odd approaches that are difficult to build and difficult to use, we should focus on making quality documentation in the wiki, and quality tutorials on these forums. Instead of people investing their time in a strange "university" that's likely to get no where, they should take that time to write out explanations of different aspects of programming for everyone to see. This accomplishes several things.
  • There's little duplicate information. Which also means that people don't spend their time talking about things that have already been explained well enough.
  • There's a community supported, revisable document that explains things well and clearly, and is always up to date and correct.
  • Information is easy to find, always available, and doesn't require the use of some specific server and mod pack.
  • The infrastructure already exists. We don't have to build a whole server and an education model that may or may not involve specified teachers and complex programs and APIs for laying out an explanation. We instead just write, and post.
That's my thoughts on this. I really do hope to see a focus on documentation to the users in these forums. There's not even a "Getting Started With ComputerCraft" type of post stickied to the tutorials section. That's embarrassing. A long time ago, there was an initiative called the "Ask a pro renewal project." And it seems to me that didn't quite go as far as they'd hoped. Perhaps we need a ""Ask a pro renewal project" renewal project" =P

I wrote a new tutorial in the AaP series a couple months back, finishing out the Computer Basics tutorial set. I always welcome well-written tutorials that fit the scheme, as well as suggestions for extensions of the scheme to cover topics not already covered on the Lua-users wiki, or in the PIL or reference manual resources.

Would it be possible to get a post stickied to the Tutorials section with a list of introductory tutorials to get brand new players informed?

We're not against the server. What we are trying to say is that by claiming that you are "CCU5" while CCU4 is not even officially dead is:

Using the same name and essentially trying to behave as though CCU4 is dead is extremely disrespectful and rude.

Anyway, ElvishJerricco pointed out some really good points you should take a look at. Good luck with the server!

Dunno if this CCU5 will happen? But anyway maybe people coming on the server should fill out a quiz sort of thing. This can be used to group people to different classes so nothing they are learning is above them. likewise for lower scored(beginners) to ComputerCraft will find it easier to listen to basic things. I guess this would help for organisation/attention span of students.

Just a suggestion :D/>
