Why is ComputerCraft (and especially turtles) so unpopular amongst large Tekkit server admins

Today, I spent a large amount of time looking for a tekkit server that would be fun to play on (mostly just non-whitelisted servers). Unfortunately, all the best, highest quality servers had ComputerCraft completely banned, or at LEAST turtles, and I would like to know why. I asked around there, but I have not gotten very good answers: the closest I have found was someone saying that the admin had said that turtles were causing memory issues, possibly with chunk loading, but this does not seem right.

Does anyone have any insight as to what might be causing this? It MIGHT be possible to either (1) formalize a bug report and get it fixed, or even just (2) come up with a bios mod that prevents the problems from happening, but only if we know what the problems are.

Now I'm back on my Computer I can make a proper post. Dan maintains that in its present state, ComputerCraft should only be used on servers with players you trust. I have made some progress in making this better in the next release.

As for turtles causing memory issues - that's bullshit. There's nothing about turtles which could cause memory issues.

(1) Could the fact that the in the bukkit version, turtles create fake players when they place blocks cause the loading of chunks?

(2) From my reasearch, I sounds like the turtles don't play well with many (all?) permissions systems. Is there some way they could track who placed/crafted them, and then follow those permissions?

I know bukkit is not officially supported, but I still hope this can be figured out.

For the turtle to even place, it will need to be in a loaded chunk - and the position of that player is not even set.

That would be down to the bukkit porters. While its possible that the persons name who placed the turtle could be stored, it probably isn't as simple as setting the turtle to have the same name. Many other mods work exactly the same way in creating a fake player, including things like buildcraft and redpower, so I don't think this would be an issue any more than those mods.

If anyone does give a reason why they don't have CC enabled, please let me know - we can work on these issues but only with server owner support.

i can DOWN any server with this mod by many timers and comps so you only way too del world or use 3-4 old bakup
its grif mod and very dangerus mod
i can even format you server drive with this mod
well you can just go into mcedit and remove all the blocks with the computercraft id!

"i can even format you server drive with this mod"

This guy needs to get his head out of his ass.
The points hold, it IS a very risky mod, but this guy does know how to talk about how amazing he isn't.

I can really only think of these problems.
  • It's possible to crapflood the harddrive, provided you don't have a quota.
  • The server can livelock while tasks aren't yielding, resulting in the 10-sec-or-so watchdog timer to kick in and kill the task.
  • A forkbomb probably won't kill the CPU but it will probably eat up all the remaining RAM available to the server.

There are large tekkit servers? This is news to me.

Well I can imagine they are worried that turtles give too much power. just for fun I developed a few bombing programs used to reliably nuke/TNT where I target, you can make them steal your enemies' stuff and destroy their bases, you can even walk through the air with a good enough program, you can use them to place lava if you know how and much more. don't get me wrong, I'm an enormous fan of cc, it's just what I'm looking for in mc but turtles are dangerous, it's a fact

Most of the good "tekkit" servers just run the original mods, not tekkit itself (you know, actually downloading the mods instead of using a partly stolen modpack).
Turtles are slightly overpowered, considering you can just download a script to do mining off these forums.

To be honest I think the hard drive flooding and such issues are a big turn off for most admins. It may have been fixed but you used to be able to create files that couldn't be deleted (under Windows Explorer).

The only "big" tekkit servers i've seen actually use tekkit
big meaning i regularly see 20~70 people on there

Using Tekkit is the only feasible way to get this many mods. It's just too big a time an effort investment to get everything working well, and get all the users working with it, on top of all the general hassle of keeping a minecraft server running.

Yet if you google there's ways round that.

Regardless, I'm going to ensure that people will no longer be able to create undeletable files or spam the hard drives with large files in the next version.

Well you could use one of the available patchers and compile your own pack xD

Maybe because Turtles are spamming the Chat with NoCheatPlus messages?

That would be a NoCheatPlus issue
