Poll Section
Started by cmdpwnd, 05 April 2016 - 02:23 AMPosted 05 April 2016 - 04:23 AM
The forums are getting totally, overbearingly obese with polls in various sections of forums that disrupt the subforum they are placed in. Can we please have a polls subforum. Would work exactly like existing subforums just obviously the first tag would be poll and then its actual category, API/Utility for example. Also, I would easily say the best place to put it would be General/Polls

Which subforums are you talking about? I don't see anything of note - there's one on the front page of General (fairly far down the list) and a couple on other subforums, but admittedly I didn't check every single forum.

I am almost exclusively browsing the Programs/APIs&Utilities forum and it is ridiculous. Assuming that the majority of people who write programs/tutorials/apis etc would like feeback, the number of polls is already stacking up. As for other subforums I'm not sure as I do not frequent them but I would imagine this is consistent? Regardless, I think that polls should have their own forum most likely under general

I don't see very many polls, maybe 1 in 10 or 15 posts has a poll. I read all the forums except forum games and servers (and I do read those occasionally).
Operating Systems is the forum with the most polls, it has 5 post with polls and 23 posts without polls on the first page. (this excludes the two pinned threads).
I happen to think polls are pretty much useless; the community is so small it is no trouble to post feedback in a comment.

I don't like the idea of polls in the first place (should have mentioned OS duh, again I'm not on there much or…. ever really) But I really think that they are just littered about and since they can be posted anywhere it doesn't really flow or make sense as it effectively can 'bleed' across all of the forums which brings about smearing on the windows of clarity on the forums and their categories which is the intention of having said categories to begin with. I find it really a pain to sift out relevant information in a forum/subforum that is dedicated to being relevant with the cause being a post type which can apply to any and all aspects of the mod and anything done with it by posing questions to its readers for feedback on information not yet given. Which is why I think it should be in General/Polls

Do you have any links to poll topics that don't contain content in the post which would allow them to be posted in the section they're in? A topic having a poll attached doesn't mean it no longer belongs in the section it's in. I think you're trying to make a problem where none exists.

I'm not saying that the polls aren't relevant to the post in which they exist I'm saying that getting feedback on it should not be embedded within the post as it is or at least make it so that it is a spoiler or link or something that doesn't take up an entire length of another post just to ask questions before you even see what the post is about. As it is now, it looks like the Topic post is like a large comment or response to the poll and not that the poll is part of that topic post.
Clarity: They are relevant. However their placement and design makes it look irrelevant as you have not seen its topic of basis. Rendering them to a new reader 1 irrelevant because they don't know what its talking about yet. 2. Total annoyance to scroll down to look what seems like a comment rather than a post which contains the subject matter.

your asking to change something about ipBoards (the software running the forums), the admins are limited in changing things like this

Didn't know that. What about using links? When a user makes a poll can they parse the poll and post and and link them separately?
[Poll @(using for lack of actual url) https://www.computercraft.info/forums2/General/Polls/post.php]
1. How do you feel about this?
2. What should I improve on?

I'm meaning as officially supported by computercraft.info although, technically yes this is a link to a poll

I'd disagree, polls are good as they are. I don't see a problem with their placement.

Polls are officially supported by the forum software. I can't think of any circumstance that you would need to have a poll separate from your main topic. It just adds clutter for no reason.
