Why does moving a thread leave a 'shortcut' in the original location?

Just something I was wondering the other day. Doesn't it kind of defeat the purpose of moving the thread to leave a link to it in the original forum?

The simple answer is "because we tick the box to leave a shortcut every time we move a thread".

While it does leave an entry in the original forum, it'll no longer be bumped by replies. The idea is to make it somewhat easier for the OP to find their way back to it.

One thing I've noticed is that the link prevents the forum it is in to be marked as read, regardless of whether I've seen the topic or not. At the moment, I use the 'mark forum as read' feature once I'm sure that's the only thing unread.

Hmm, that's a good point. I guess a notification sent to the OP could work too but I'm not sure that the forum has that option :P/>

We could manually send a PM, but the New Members group cannot use the PM feature (as a spam prevention measure), so those posts would still need a forwarding trail. We use them in general to make things easier for users to find posts that have moved.

Alright, I see now. Thanks :)/>
