It seems like some kind of printer. Not sure. Maybe for turtle office buildings: Turtles prints papers, Then sell stuff on Rednet. Just idea.

for minecraft 1.3.1 or minecraft 1.3.2 ? I don't think the big popular mods are going to be updated any time some. some moders i was talking too were finding it difficult due to major changes in the code for example the merging of client and server. and the bigger the mod the more headaches.

1.3.2, I asked him and he said he was busy porting to 1.3.2 (And forge is out for it…)

I just don't see the practical application of printers though. Unless I'm missing something, what would making printed paper accomplish?

What does anything in computercraft DO? It does whatever you make it do.
Cranium #13

I was just looking for possibles, anyone else know what a printer would do? Other than printing, what kind of things could it do? I'm thinking maybe being able to print books?

Only for interest as peripheral developer: How long will it take until CC is updated to MC1.3.2? Just so that I can decide whether to add new features now or start porting to 1.3.2 myself.
Pinkishu #15
Posted 17 August 2012 - 05:51 PM
well books are a feature of MC1.3 so it would be an easy way to print many books

We are working on it right now - I don't know of the progress as I don't have any access to a computer until Sunday, but we are trying to get it out of the door as soon as we can. I can see dan doing daily commits to the 1.3 branch though!

Side note: I like how there's one feature in plain sight in that image which no one has even pointed out :(/>/>

Yeah, what's up with the lime green floppy disk? It could be a colored disk that is easier to recognize, or it could be something more.

EDIT: Also, does anyone else see the second slot on the disk drive texture?
Cranium #18
Posted 17 August 2012 - 06:44 PM
I think that it might be a printer that you're seeing… But nothing's confirmed yet. But it does seem likely giving what video Dan posted along with the picture…

Interesting things pointed out with the arrow (what seems to be a different floppy disk and a new block?):
Pinkishu #20
Posted 17 August 2012 - 06:50 PM
Well the new block might likely be the one he has opened and yes there is a new feature of colored floppy disks :(/>/>
KaoS #21

It seems to me like a multiple disk loader, you can rotate through disks to read
Cranium #22
Posted 17 August 2012 - 06:53 PM
Hey, that's a good idea! I wonder if it would use commands like diskSlot() kind of like the turtles do…
KaoS #23
Posted 17 August 2012 - 07:05 PM
judging from how it is set out it would be like rotating through a queue of disks
Pinkishu #24
Posted 17 August 2012 - 07:08 PM
Doubt it, could do the same with turtles
KaoS #25
Posted 17 August 2012 - 07:09 PM
i guess, just an idea, but it is definitely using a queue system for processing mutiple items
Cranium #26
Posted 17 August 2012 - 07:14 PM
Could be for stacks of paper if it's a printer. and the slot on the left is for ink?
EDIT: could be still going with floppies, but changing the color with dyes?
Pinkishu #27
Posted 17 August 2012 - 07:24 PM
Tips: the "new block" is the one that has the GUI opened
@

"i had to drop all the items in my inv that gave the answer away before i took the screenshot (though i forgot the block itself)"

its likely a printer or book copier or disk copier

disk shuffler can already be easily done otherwise (e.g. turtles) so its not that
as dan said "but i wouldnt add a new block to do something you can already do easilly"

Its one of those:

disk colorer
book copier

multi-disk burner (again likely not)

Also:

[15:54:50] <+Neppy> "Printer" does not became the same as his word when i pixelate it
[15:54:58] <@dan200> Neppy: yeah it dose
[15:55:01] <@dan200> i mean
[15:55:01] <@dan200> no
[15:55:02] <@dan200> it doesnt
[15:55:07] <@Cloudy> Hahaha
[15:55:07] <@dan200> keep looking

If anyone wants to try, its standard MC font, size 12 using the paint.net pixelate effect with edge-length 5

Now there's a theory, but what would that achieve at the end of the day? constant link between separate disks would be cool but I'm doubtful that they would do that

imo colored disks will just be to identify them easier

We had a request for them - it was an easy feature, so why not? I make no judgement as to whether they are better or not, but if people want pink floppies, let them have them :(/>/>

Just to be clear, the feature in the picture is nothing to do with floppies.

RED floppy DANGER:virus sample
GREEN floppy Recovery DIsk
BLACK Buildcraft oil control backup

I can see some advantages to multiple colors My guess is 16 like RP colors.

Maybe that is how we color the disks? automated disk production system allowing for software mass production for sale on servers ?

But it means that just because something doesn't "have a purpose" *cough*readingsigns*cough* that it's necessarily off the table. After all, colored floppies don't really have a use beyond the people who want them.

You can do this easily using turtles and diskdrives.

Printer. The blurred text indeed looks like "Printer"
matejdro #50
Posted 26 August 2012 - 09:20 AM
Why would a printer have an interface like this?
D3matt #51
Posted 26 August 2012 - 03:38 PM
Put ink in the left slot, paper or books in the top, printed paper comes out on the bottom slot?
matejdro #52
Posted 26 August 2012 - 03:47 PM
Yes, but why would you want to print 6 books at once?
KFAFSP #53
Posted 26 August 2012 - 06:22 PM
This is probably obscure but…

…it has 6 slots because it's a printer that prints two-sided (books have two sides per page)
…it is a fax or scanner device with a paper-queue for input.

The last idea is probably more realistic, because reading MAPS like in the printers peripheral is bit-manipulation, but reading BOOKS is just reading strings from a java interface with Version 1.3.2 now. So, why not? It should be easy once you figured out to do a printer, and if cloudy says easy things are done, why not.

But I have to admit that the blurred text neither looks like Printer, Scanner nor Fax. So, let's just wait for the update, shall we?
Cloudy #54
Posted 26 August 2012 - 06:40 PM
Sigh.

It's a printer. The game has been given away many times in this thread and in IRC, including a quote from dan200 where it is obvious.
D3matt #55
Posted 26 August 2012 - 07:39 PM
Yes, but why would you want to print 6 books at once?
My guess, by the arrows, is that it cycles through the 6 slots, you're not printing all 6 at once. Printed books/paper obviously can't stack.
