================ ORIGINAL POST ================

I just started a new series on my YouTube channel which I am calling The ComputerCraft Challenge. In this series I will be attempting to mine, build, and just plain survive without doing any of the work by hand, instead programming turtles to do everything from day one.

I just put up the first episode and I'd love any feedback people are willing to give. I'm no ComputerCraft guru, but I'll learn quickly or die!

Thanks! I'm enjoying it so I'll be doing a few more episodes at least. :D/>/>

Interesting :)/>/>.
Question: Will you make your turtle into a crafty one? :P/>/>

That's a good point, really I should have a crafty turtle instead of a crafting table shouldn't I?
I'll have to rectify that. Episode 2 is already recorded, but thereafter I'll do more through a crafty turtle.

An SMP version could be really fun, but I imagine less stressful, having more eyes and likely collaboration.

Another thing that would be cool is to have more people in the community try the CC challenge (in SSP) and post videos. To have it be like the old 404 challenge or things like that.

Hi, remember me from youtube? (my name there's jillheden)
I got a bukkit ready for a SMP version, with only ComputerCraft 1.4.1 (not tekkit!)
My only problem left is to ban every item/blocks except tools and CC related blocks, and to get a IP for the server (currently it's on my laptop :(/>/> )

EDIT: ⇈ Done! ⇈ Only thing left is to put the (bukkit) server on a server or just a stationary computer.

Decided to try it and wow, that didn't feel like an hour. Seemed like I spent a lot of time in manual control, which seems to defeat the point, but I was adding some more restrictions as I went along. I was doing it at first, but shortly in I decided I wouldn't directly manipulate the turtle's inventory, but use drop to make it give me stuff, and suck to pick up things I drop for it, which isn't something that can easily be generalized to a higher level than "suck to slot #". Also decided I was not going to break the turtle, which means either elaborate searching algorithms for things like finding the next tree - which would take too long to write for this context; writing single-use programs every time I need him to go somewhere; or just manually controlling him.

Can't upload it until I get home, out of town right now and with my current internet it'd take several days to upload this even in 240p.

For the next chapter, I might "cheat" a bit and load my turtlex api, which will give me a leg up on doing a lot of inventory-related automation.

Hey, I really like this series :D/>/>

Quick tip on the refuel function: turtle.refuel(number) will refuel with up to the number of items you specify, turtle.refuel() with no parameters will refuel with all the items in the slot if you can (and turtle.refuel(0) won't consume anything, just return whether the item is fuel or not). This is why the turtle gobbled up all your wood: as soon as it ran out of fuel, it gobbled up every single wooden block that it had in the slot.

It seems like the wiki wasn't up to date with this information, so i've gone ahead and updated them. In future it's a good idea to type "help turtle" (or any other API) to see the real parameters an API takes (I keep that 100% uptodate), then it's easier to spot when the wiki is wrong (and if you're feeling a really good netizen, update it yourself :(/>/>)

Also: Inspired by your first video, i'm going to make broken turtles store their fuel level in the next version.

I did eventually figure out the deal with turtle.refuel(), that comes along in episode 4. Thanks for updating the wiki too, it was on my to-do list, but I'm sure you can imagine how that goes. :-P

I like this series. You have a very enthusiastic demeanor, and are pretty fun to listen to. You're good with coding, but not so much that it's not entertaining to watch. If someone like dan200 or Cloudy did this, they would bang through without a problem, I can imagine dan200 can use his own mod. But with someone who doesn't code (almost) flawlessly, it's got suspense, like creepers and skeletons while you code. I might take this myself one day, but I can't film it.

I'm very much waiting for episode 4, and I hope for many more. :(/>/>

Another good video! How about a pro-tip? This is just for minecraft, you can cook logs in a furnace to get charcoal, which is just like coal, but doesn't stack with it. You can use it for torches etc. or as fuel for furnaces, and most importantly: TURTLES! So you aren't hurting for fuel. So don't convert your logs to wooden planks, convert it to charcoal.

I actually did that to get the torches I currently have. I just didn't bother once I was doing the mining program since Sidekick should find more than enough coal now.

Uploading part 1 of my own as I write this. 1h was just too much, even with some editing it was 45 minutes so I'm cutting the first ep into 2 parts, part 1 is 30m and uploading right now. I harvest some trees - that part feels a lot like bwochinski's, which is inevitable I think - then I hastily dig a hidey-hole to hide from night and write programs to dig a spiral staircase, make a furnace, and climb the stairs again. Part 2 is shorter, includes me throwing together a manual control program (I've added the restriction of not breaking the turtle, as well as interacting with it's inventory only through drop/suck, so a more efficient way of moving and positioning the turtle was absolutely required) and using it to lazily mine a vein of coal.

Next episode I think I'm going to focus on food, not that I need any yet but because it'll take a while to yield much and it will involve some interesting programs. Not sure where to go from there; normally I'd mine exactly like bwochinski did, vertical shafts in staggered rows, but…well, he did that already, and it seems pointless to write programs to do the exact same thing, and would be boring for people to watch, so I guess I'll be doing some sort of branch mining instead.

Will edit video into the post when it's done uploading…which will be an hour at least it seems. I get back home from the middle of nowhere with the incredibly bad 3g and find my cable internet here is still out, so I'm on proper-but-still-tethered-3g, which doesn't have the best up speed. :sigh:

:edit: forgive the delay, got caught up with additional filming.

Good news re: ep 2: wrote a handy little "mow" program, that follows the ground chopping any grass and flowers along the way, and with it collected 16 seeds mowing a 16x16 area.
Bad news: realised after doing this that I need to make another turtle, and give it a diamond hoe, before I can plow dirt to plant the seeds in. >.< So, will be off to the depths to mine after that.

Also, I got killed by skeles, and I wasn't even recording at the time, so that just sucked in every way.

Anyway, ep 1 part 1!

Hi, your videos are great!
A useful tip you might want to know:
you actually can turn your turtle with the "go" program and even use "fd" for forward moving, "lt" for turning left, "rt" for turning right.

To the bug in video 5:
I bet depth is nil in the CheckWalls() function, because you declared it as local :D/>/>

There you go, bwochinski! You're an inspiration to us all! Keep at it. Now I'm wondering how you're going to get that turtle out of that hole without digging, and no diamonds… Rednet? I'm just as bad with it as you are, so don't feel embarrassed. I use turtles, dabble with actual computers, do some circuitry with 'em. That's it.

..and episode 2, in which I clear out a large space, make a couple of chests, and do… some other things I'm probably forgetting.

Spoiler

ep 2 could probably have stood some editing, but I've got the flu and can't be bothered. enjoy, I'm going to go sit in my recliner under a blanket and nap while blowing my nose and feeling sorry for myself.

Sorry for long delay, here's episode 5! I go iron mining, make a modified version of the vein mining program from last time to mine veins of ore, where compare() is useful, and find a long-term solution to the fuel crisis.
Spoiler

Next episode, things are gonna get awesome. I'm coding up something special I thought of while finishing up epsiode 5, doing most of the coding off-camera because it's gonna be several hours worth of work and I can't imagine anyone wants to watch me do nothing but write code for 3 hours, so I'm just gonna record a few bits of of the coding and debugging to edit together. I don't wanna spoil it, but suffice to say it's going to drasticly change the way I play in my cc challenge world.

I set up a basic CC challenge server in case anyone wishes to give it a go without cheating!

Connect to mischiefcollective.com

You need the latest FTB to run it, but no additional mods required.

In theory you can't interact with anything except turtles and computers. (although I understand there's a couple of bugs I still need to iron out)

There should be a bunch of turtles around spawn. Don't take them all!

Mostly me showing off (and fixing/working around a couple of bugs in) my new ctrl script, which takes the manual control program I've been using a lot and adds location memory, pathfinding, and queued commands. At episode 3, while you were fixing log and programming mine I was getting angry because A. log's checkFuel() didn't go back to slot 1 after refueling, B. mine's logic for going back up didn't check for fuel and the while loop for going down doesn't seem to end, and C. none of your functions are local. Good series though, I'm still enjoying it :)/>

Hey ben, just wanted to suggest a (I think) different method of recording…
http://forums.statio...plit-obs.80232/

scroll down to the Open Broadcasting Software section… instead of choosing the game video source just do a software capture source and set it to the whole screen. I've just started using it for mine and it's great. Keeps file sizes down, hardly any impact on performance (for me, though my rig is pretty beastly), and pretty good quality. Anyway, awesome series!

Bwochinski, just wanted to say I stumbled across your series and that got me into ComputerCraft. I love how your sidekick goes down into a hole and "magically" comes back with ores!

You inspired me to write my own from scratch. I call mine drillfield. You specify a width and length of the field to drill holes in and it figures out where to position the holes and mines everything in that field. Further, if there's more than 3 slots empty, it doesn't bother returning to the output chest but continues to dive, saving travel time and fuel. This is the automation others are probably telling you you need to add to sidekick. My program takes about 6 days solid running to clean out a 160x160 field, 4X as fast if I start at level 16, but I've added in extra parameters to divvy up this field with multiple turtles. 8 turtles can do the job overnight, yielding about 2 stacks of diamonds and more iron and redstone than I know what to do with.

I'm looking forward to additional episodes!

Idk man, doe your is simpler it is not as practical. A nice improvement for your code would be to give the functionality to manovre the turtle via a console or similar.

EDIT: I've looked closer to your code, and it's got some major flaws. The biggest one is that you cannot select slot 10-16. I remade your code for more finess; take a look at it: 9weNSjGW
