Have you checked the turtles inventory?

yes, if the entities are killed by the turtle you can SEE that only orbs are dropped but not the regular loot.

You didn't answer my question. Have you checked the turtles inventory? If you kill mobs they don't drop them - the item gets placed in the turtles inventory.

i know that… and as i said, you can SEE that nothing but exp orbs are dropped so there is nothing the turtle could pick up. In any case, i found out that destroying my pre 1.4.3 turtles and placing them again seems to resolve the problem. This might be marked as SOLVED :(/>/>

Seeing is nothing to do with it. When a turtle kills a mob no loot is dropped - it goes straight into the turtles inventory without even being seen.

And dunno why that worked, but whatever - closed.
