So, first of all it's 2 items:

1. A simple remote, you press a key to "open it", it presents a simple interface where you can insert a floppy with the code for it.
Once it has a floppy inside you can press some keys while it's selected in the hotbar to have it start different programs.
For example you could code it so that if you press F while it's selected, or right-click it or whatever, it sends a signal to a computer to turn on the lights of your house, or open the door or whatever.

2. A more advanced remote, the PDA would have an interface that opens if right-clicked with a screen and a command line interface or it's own PalmOS.
It would only be able to send and receive information over rednet/http to other computers in range, you could use it to monitor activity or to send commands around.
It's slower to use than the remote, but has a lot more uses.

Was thinking about tossing this one up myself. Maybe when you open a normal computer it auto-mounts the PDA's directory contents like a floppy? That way you could sync files between computers.
Also to make it still worth crafting floppies: PDA uses a diamond for the screen, a wireless modem for the top middle slot, and maybe iron or gold instead of stone for the sides?

I really want suggestion 1. I would use it to make a super thick turtle opened wall to get into my secret base

make the pda like a fishing pole so you cast out a line that lands on a computer block to give you access it will look cool and is better for computer security.

I'd like better if the pda was wireless so I could hide all the "machine" part somewhere and it would still work, but I see no reason why it couldn't do both…

Throwable bundled cable? So comp can sense redstone signal and open rednet port? Interesting.
But isn't wireless rednet with id checking secure enough?

How about this:
Notebook - mobile computer.
Can be placed on any solid block by rightclick and open console as comp. Leftclick by empty hand to close and pickup.
If rightclicked without solid block to place, opens in hands like map, do not block vision. Leftclick to close.
Has internal wireless port in upper cover. If placed, can use cables from four sides, bottom disk drive/peripheral.
Will it shoutdown on close? As you wish.
Receipt? Modem, comp, diamond case may be.

if you want security just send over wifi also a really long password or something, no need for direct connection.

When I suggested the PDA I was thinking of a device that could only interact with other computers, but I'd twist it a little.
I'd add the "GPS map" to the PDA since it makes much sense, but I'd give the laptop the ability to link and control the blocks where it's placed on and to control any block (connected to rednet) not only just send commands to other PCs
Also it could store multiple floppy in it and install with a command them on the block where it's placed on (or next).
