Separate "Programs"-subforums for OS and "Security" software?

So basically, different "operating systems" (term used loosely) are flooding the Programs subforum. There are dozens of them, and they might not be as interesting to everyone, a lot of them are basically the same with a fancy boot intro, not to mention everyone and their dog seems to be making a new one at any given time.

At the same time, "Security" software (ie. if read() == "myPassword" then rs.setOutput(…) in 500 variations) does a lot of the same thing, though not quite as bad, just even less useful since anybody can make one in 5 minutes, 1 with any prior programming experience. It may also be the first thing to occur to everybody starting with CC.

Would it be possible to make a new subforum for these script types? I'm not gonna go so far as to claim they're useless to everybody, just.. most people. It'd be great to see a Programs subforum without the "pollution" from endless amounts of OSes and door locks, where people could focus on… erm.. proper content? :P/>/>

I'm inclined to believe that having proper subforums for these only worsens the problem of pollution in the main forum. Here's my thinking: Joe Mcnoob still happens across the forums, goes to programs, doesn't bother to scan the existing titles or listed subforums, let alone read the rules, and posts some lame program that barely runs and doesn't actually do anything significant anyway.

So only the programs written by people intelligent/literate/cautious enough to figure out where their post goes and search to see if a better program with similar goals already exists in that forum end up in the subforums. Which is great for those who want a selection of better security and OS programs. But it doesn't do anything to remove the proliferation of novice efforts being posted in the programs forum. It may even worsen it, because of the "laughing philosophers" problem.

Still, I don't think it's a bad idea. There is an upside, and it's possible that creating a new subforum could work exactly as advertised.

Yeah, people might not post in the correct subforum. That is what moderators are for.

Reading this I wholeheartedly agree. Makes me want to create some sort of "apt-get" or "cpan" with pastebin integration.
Or something that allows another sort of index where highly rated programs can be more easily identified.

Need to sleep over this.
