I'm not aware of any other existing posts in this forum suggesting this idea but I apologise in advance if there are.

I have just spent a few days getting used to the rednet api and making my own in-game server to host accounts for my OS. But now I want to make more of these servers to host different things. A dedicated server block of some kind would be a great addition to this, already incredible, mod and it would make networking a lot easier. I'm talking about a block that has some kind of pre-built networking program and that can host multiple different programs and computers at the same time. Also if you could set the server ID as well as it's label, that would be pretty cool. Maybe a built-in modem and wireless monitor connection too? As I have already stated; I am sorry if this has been suggested already, I'm just really eager to get an idea like this through ! :P/>/>

That would be awesome! :P/>/>

Nah. We give you the tools to make all that possible. You can do a server hosting many computers if you wish, with the server controlling all of the computers functions. Adding a block which makes stuff easier for you to do it is not needed.

Really, the only way this suggestion would make sense would be to put some kind of artificial nerfing on the regular computers/turtles so that they couldn't run server software. And I would really hate that.

Computers can already be programmed to run multiple programs and to act as rednet file servers/relays/hosts. The reason that most programs in computer craft aren't written to run simultaneously is because the computers are so cheap that it's no problem to just have multiple computers. If someone does write multitasking software, it would be a shame if it only ran on one particular type of computer in the game.

Haha I suppose so. Rednet can just be a bit annoying sometimes and it would be cool to have an actual server block. But I'll just improve my rednet knowledge :P/>/>.

What you really want is the programs that make setting up a server or running multiple programs. There are various efforts. [1.41]BlueFrames OS Beta 0.4( Beta 0.5 comming up ) | multitasking of the best level represents a multi-tasking effort, and I was working on a program that allows relay hosts to receive different commands and respond appropriately (it was mostly so I could order a GPS host to relay rednet to a computer/turtle out of range of another).

Thanks, this looks like it should do the trick !

The only thing suggested here and impossible now is an Id change. And that should not be changed!

Whoa … hahaha. I missed that, I guess I assumed that was just having to do with the label idea.
