How not to ask Stupid Questions

The internet provides us easy access to communication and the sharing of information. Unfortunately, it seems that many believe that because information is easily shared, they should put forth no effort into SEARCHING for issues they are having trouble with. In fact, the Ask a Pro forum is becoming so bogged down with so many silly questions such as "how do I make files" or "why am I getting this error" that I rarely visit it any more – it is a waste of time for those experienced in lua to answer questions which have already been answered. Before you ask questions, please, please, please, go and actively SEARCH using one of the following methods:

Option 1) Use the search function which is easily accessible in the upper right hand corner of the page.
Option 2) Look through the first few pages of Ask a Pro and the Tutorials forums. Most rudimentary things which you might need an answer to have already been posted there.
Option 3) Look on the ComputerCraft wiki. It provides all the information which you need to succeed in ComputerCraft.
Option 4) Google it. Of course if it is ComputerCraft related then you may not find an answer, but it is always worth giving it a shot.

If you have done all four of these things and you are still confused, you should ask on the forums for help. Please keep in mind that you need to post your FULL CODE for us to be of any help to you - people are not going to spoonfeed it to you or write the entire code for you. Another thing to note is that if you want people to help you, they are much more likely to do so if you put your code in a readable format such as within code tags or on pastebin.

The purpose of this post is not to bash noobies to ComputerCraft or lua, but it is my opinion that the 'instant gratification' which many new users seem to require is becoming more than annoying to those who would otherwise be happy to provide help.

Regards,
-Challenge.Accepted

Note: I do not mean to behave as if I am a moderator or an incredibly important user, I merely feel as though this emphatically needed to be stated by somebody.

adding "computercraft" to your google search is basically using the computercraft forums search bar but without the limitations forced on to it.

Or using the site operator, i.e. including site:computercraft.info in your search terms.

Good job Challenge.Accepted :D/>/> One mistake:
If you have done all three of these things and you are still confused, …
You listed four things. :)/>/>

Also, could you add about posting full code and the code tags? We all have to mention it every 3 posts. :D/>/>

Oops. Fixed. And yes I'll add those.

It's unfortunate that this needed to be said… you may also want to mention people asking for prebuilt code and using pastebin for long codes (I prefer it when people use it regardless of code length because it keeps tab-formatting). that being said the Ask a Pro section will always be my Favorite area of the forums because it is where I can learn the most and repay that by helping others

All in all a very truthful post

It is quite unfortunate, but I am glad that someone said it. Hopefully this will save our more experienced members a few headaches.

Yes, and we all know the cases where code is inserted into the post and there is an error at line 137 or something. :)/>/>

Added both of these. I have noticed a lot of terrible formatting when people are asking questions and it makes it difficult to help them.

No I think you should go ahead and post with the code that you've tried to make work and then we'll help you out from there. This post is pointed more towards people who ask questions clearly without having even attempted to look for the answer first.

Here, here to this and the OP

as Bubba said that is quite different, you have attempted to find out yourself.

also to add something else to the OP. Actually tell us the problem whether its an error and you have the message or if its just a video, or photo, or even a description! ANYTHING! Saying I have a problem, having 180+ lines of code and then expecting someone to find it… no that aint happening quick, stop bumping it. that is all :P/>
