I just wanted to get a general idea of what free games people like to play around here.

I personally enjoy:
  • Urban Terror
  • Toribash (occasionally - can't get away from the freakin 9 year olds though)
  • Tremulous (Awesome game, but for some reason not many people play it)
  • FlightGear when I feel like crashing expensive crap
  • The occasional game of TF2
  • Minesweeper :3
All fun, especially the top three.

What are your favorites?

Planetside 2, League of Legends. I consider Minecraft pretty much free because I paid $10 for it and it's delivered so many endless hours. I truly believe Minecraft is, hands down, the best $10 I have ever spent. Which is often times how it goes. The cheap indie games (steam sales, anybody? $2 for a 2-pack? Yes please!) seem to deliver more value by far than the mainstream $60 games and most F2P games.

League of Legends is a ridiculously addicting free game
Alien swarm is really fun if you have a few friends to play it with
Realm of the Mad God is OK, though it is rage inducing.
TF2 is pretty good (though I got it before it was free :(/>)
Tribes: Ascend is good, although it is reasonably hard, not that easy to get in to and rather slow in levelling.
Ib is pretty fun (though I had trouble making it work) along with a lot of other free 2D horror games :P/>
Some small time ones like super crate box can kill an hour or so
Planetside 2 can be pretty fun, especially with some friends or some sort of clan

There are quite a few examples of terrible F2P games; before you waste your time downloading a F2P game at least look at some gameplay, some of them aren't even worth a 10 minute download.

I noticed that all of you listed League of Legends. What is it that makes the game so much fun? I've watched a bit of gameplay and it doesn't seem so interesting. But maybe it's one of those games that you have to play to enjoy.

I can almost promise that you'll like it if you play it.
Don't know if you like mmorpg games and so but if you do then you'll probably like it! :D/>

I hate LoL without friends - I never ever play it without friends :P/>
If you get in to it with friends you will see why people like it, at first it didn't appeal to me either, it just looked like a load of people running about.

So many people at my college play it. I just go up to random people and it's like "You play lol? Wanna play?"

I enjoy playing "Grammar Nazi on YouTube Comments". But mainly logic/board/puzzle-type games. Like sudoku. And quantum tic-tac-toe. I do believe both of those are "free".

A clever little game I can recommend playing is "Gravity Bone". It's very short, but it's a humorous satire on a lot of common video game conventions, particularly about how they tend to train us to believe and work by a series of rules, and our reaction when they are broken or changed.
Another interesting one is "The Stanley Parable", a HL2 mod. This is a game where you're given rules and instructions, but there are consequences to breaking them- what's interesting is the game limits its enforcement of those instructions- if the player is asked to make a binary choice and tells the player which choice is the right one, it won't stop you from making the wrong one, but scold you and demand you don't make the mistake twice. The character GlaDOS from Portal played with similar themes, the fact that the game universe constructs truths and we actually don't have a choice but to believe them until something else happens (who played Portal, with no prior knowledge of the game, and thought there would be cake at one point, and then thought there wouldn't be cake at another point?)

Both worth a play.

Gunz is a good free to play third person shooter. You use a mix of swords/guns/nades etc… It allows you to cancel a move and start another one while the first still follows through like Street Fighter which allows for some really neat game play. Would recommend it for anyone that is into that type of game.

It's good to see so many free/very cheap games. I've always been a huge fan of free stuff (who isn't?), and it looks like these are worth checking into. The Stanley Parable sounds pretty awesome and I've seen gameplay of Gunz before: I'll probably download them tonight when I get home.
