title: needing help with server

I am running a non dedicated and need some help adding program to the server i see so many good operating systems i'd like to use but the problem come when add the program and running it if I somehow manage to get it on there, other people have no problems so it has to be something I'm doing wrong can someone help please and give me a straight guide to add programs to a server
