I'd imagine you could do both, but you'll need to label it if you want it to keep its data.

A computer has two forms of identification: its label, and its ID number. You can change the label as you wish, but not the ID. As the saved folder is named after the ID, this means you can't change that, either.

[I've hidden this post in a spoiler. Attempting jiggery-pokery with folder names and lastid.txt is inadvisable. While it can work just fine, messing with such things is asking for trouble, especially since the IDs don't matter at all. -L]
Spoiler
You actually can change the ID of a computer. Say you had ID's: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. If you wanted to change the ID 3 to ID 9, just navigate to /saves/world/computer and rename the folder '3' to '9'. If you then wanted to place that computer down in the world, open 'lastid.txt' and change it to 8 (one less than the ID you want). This will make the next computer you place down and turn on, have the ID 9 yet have the programs of 3. I regularly delete computers with no data on them, then rename the remaining ones so that there isn't as many ID's to work with :)/>
