ComputerCraft doesn't add any other mod items/blocks as peripherals, OpenPeripheral is what does this.

Well, considering the current version of OpenPeripheral is 0.4.1, yes, I'd say update the mod first. Then try asking around in #openmods on EsperNet IRC

dude you need to have a computer connected to be able to connect it.
That hasn't been my experience with other peripherals.

Well if you have it connected through a modem, you have to click the modem / cable (on the peripheral) so you can actually talk to it…

… You did watch the video, yes? JockelMockel spammed clicks on the modems he placed, but they failed to connect.
Which is generally what happens when you connect modems to blocks that aren't recognised as peripherals. Hence why TheOriginalBIT and Cranium are pointing the finger at OpenPeripheral (the mod which adds the ability to treat many third-party blocks as peripherals).
