I am considering making a login system for a network of computers, where user files are stored on a central server and people can login to that. I just want to know if anyone has done this before or anything similar. There is no point in re-inventing the wheel!

I recommend worrying less about whether it's been done or whether people will use it (for most any given project written by anyone, the answers tend towards "yes" and "no" respectively), and more on whether you'll find it fun to write.
That said, I've noticed at least a couple of projects along these lines. Didn't pay enough attention to tell you whether they were ever finished or not.
For what it's worth, if you connect a bunch of systems via network cables and then add a disk drive to the network, all attached systems will be able to access that one drive. CC floppy disks have a very low capacity, however.
